As the coronavirus-induced lockdown was extended for another week, till 14 June, in Tamil Nadu, the state government has eased certain travel restrictions but has mandated e-registration for inter and intra-district travel and also for those willing to enter Tamil Nadu from other states/countries.

Furthermore, e-registration will also be required to travel from one police limit to another in cities like Chennai.

Meanwhile, for 11 districts in Tamil Nadu which still have high COVID-19 cases, these travel restrictions have not been relaxed. These districts are - Coimbatore, Nilgiris, Tiruppur, Erode, Salem, Karur, Namakkal, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam and Mayiladuthurai.

Here's a step-by-step guide on how to apply for e-registration:

Step 1: Go to this website https://eregister.tnega.org/ for e-registration.

Step 2: You will get two options. One option will be for travel from a foreign country and the second option will be for inter, intra-district and inter-state travel registration for individuals, industries and self-employed professionals.

Step 3: After choosing the appropriate option, you will land on an e-registration page and will be required to enter your contact number and Captcha code. Then you will receive an OTP which will then be verified and you will enter the main page.

Step 4: From the main page, you will have to choose from the following options:

- Individual/group travel via road (bike/car/SUV) (within a district, inter-district, inter-state).

- An individual/group coming inside Tamil Nadu via train/flight.

- Commercial establishments/organisation industries/business/traders/financial companies.

- Self-employed professionals (bike/car).

Procedure to follow for individual/group travel:

To apply for e-registration, an individual/group is required to fill in details like applicant name, ID proof number, travel date, no of passengers including the applicant, vehicle number, travel range (intra, inter-district or inter-state), reason for travel document and the type of vehicle. The applicant will also be required to upload a copy of the ID proof. The person will then be directed to the travel and document page.

The applicant will get a PDF of their e-registration once it is approved.

Requirement for applying in the self-employed professional category:

Housekeeping staff, electricians, plumbers, private security and other technicians have to apply for e-registration.

They are required to fill in details like applicant name, address, district, pin code, ID proof and upload a copy and vehicle number and type.

Steps to be followed by commercial establishments/organisations for application:

An application for an organisation must be made by a designated officer. An individual cannot apply directly.

The officer is required to fill in details like type of industry, organisation name and address, district and pin code, the total number of employees in the organisation, name of the authorized person alongside his email address and ID proof and submit the form.

For what reasons is travel allowed?

As per the current norms, an individual or a group can apply for e-registration for limited reasons. These are - medical emergency/death; volunteer or caregivers of people with special needs; homes for children, differently-abled or senior citizens; related transportation/staff working in observation homes and aftercare homes, places for safety for juveniles and others.
